Diabetic foot ulcers: home wound care
Diabetic foot ulcers are open sores that can form on the feet of people with diabetes. A wound care nurse comes to your home to check the wound, change the dressings and watch for infection, working alongside the doctor who manages your diabetes.
What it is
Diabetes can reduce feeling and blood flow in the feet, so a blister, a callus or a small cut can turn into a slow-healing open sore. You may not feel it at first, which is why foot wounds are often larger than they look by the time they are noticed.
Consistent, skilled wound care at home — done the same way, on a regular schedule — is one of the most important parts of helping a diabetic foot wound heal and keeping it from coming back.
Who this is for
- Adults with diabetes who have an open sore, blister or callus on a foot or lower leg
- Anyone recently discharged from hospital or a wound clinic who still needs dressing changes
- People whose physician has ordered daily or several-times-a-week wound care
- Family caregivers who need help with dressings and want to know what to watch for
