Lymphatic and lymphedema wounds: home wound care
Lymphedema is swelling caused by a build-up of lymph fluid, usually in an arm or leg. The swollen skin is easily injured and heals slowly, so wounds need careful dressing care and long-term swelling management.
What it is
When lymph fluid collects, the limb swells and the skin stretches, thickens and leaks. Even a small scrape or insect bite can turn into a wound that weeps fluid and takes a long time to close, and it can become infected.
Managing the swelling is central to healing. That may include compression, elevation, skin care and specialised massage or wrapping techniques — all as ordered by your provider.
